Spearfished a giant halibut 69.3 kg!
Last weekend our fishing guide Dainius Bliudzius spearfished a giant halibut weighing 69.3 kg. near Dolmøya. He was down at 12 meters depth when he fired the first shot in the spinal cord of the halibut. It proved not entirely unproblematic to try and and reel in the giant and get to the surface, due to the shot placement, the weight and lack of air, Dainius had to leave the halibut and his equipment at the bottom in order to grab a sturdier spearfishing gun. He surfaced and grabbed his second spearfishing gun and drew a deep breath and dove down and shot the halibut a second time. The last tug of war took place at 18 meters depth and the giant halibut had to give up. According to Dainius the halibut was extremely heavy and challenging in getting it hauled on land and in the car. Maneuvering a 70 kg halibut might be compared to an extremely strenous weight lifting exercise. Dainius tells us that the halibut has been filleted and put in the freezer.
