Dramatic halibut catch 66 kg!
Lucky Pavel Stom from Estonia got a big surprise in the form of a halibut nibble. He was about to loose rod and tackle and almost fell into the ocean when a giant halibut hit his bait. This dramatic event developed into a tug of war between the halibut and the angler. The provoked halibut tried to escape, but let up at 10 meters depth retreating and planning his next escape attempt. Pavel had barely hooked the halibut at the neck with a small 150 gram jig. He knew, that he would loose this fight due to his undersized rod and tackle and just the shear size of the halibut. Everything was set for a halibut win, the halibut breaking the the line, escapeing and winnig its freedom. The giant halibut ran out again and parked at about 12 meters depth. Quick thinking Pavel called one of his friends, who was spearfishing close by. Maybe they could rescue the catch? The blue water hunter followed the line down and an amazing sight greeted him, which proved to be a giant halibut laying quietly down hidden at the sandy bottom. He got ready to take the deadly shot with his loaded spearfishing gun. But suddenly the halibut slapped his tail and shot off with a jerk and broke the line. It was obviously not ready to give up the fight. The experienced hunter realized he only had a few seconds before the halibut darted off, the hunter followed the halibut for a short swim and luckily the halibut settled again. The hunter is running out of time and air, but the hunter attempts his final move and pulls off a well-aimed shot to the head. The giant halibut had to give up the fight, but now the real struggle begins to get the heavy halibut to the surface and ashore. After 20 exhausting minutes the hunter could pull the giant halibut ashore. The halibut weighed in at 66 kg! This is the largest halibut caught in Dolmsundet this year. Pavel Stom is one happy angler with an incredible fishing story to tell when he gets home to Estonia.
